This last July, on a Monday night, my soles may not have been in the backcountry, but I was completing target adventure number seven of the Soles in the Backcountry Summer Challenge: Compete in a Valley based running race. On May 12th Active Soles Performance Footwear began hosting the Happy Run, a recreational 5K. It isn’t timed and there is no placing. The Happy Run is simply an effort by Active Soles to encourage the community to be healthy and exercise together. Every Monday evening at six o’clock the run takes off from the Active Soles store in downtown Palmer and ends at the Palmer Ale House a few blocks away. Every week the route changes, and just recently they decided to offer a longer route for those wanting a harder challenge.

The first week of the Happy Run there were 35 participants. At the eleventh Happy Run, there were 250 people who joined the fun! After the run Active Soles has a raffle at seven o’clock, at the Palmer Ale House, where participants can win cool prizes donated by local businesses. Each run has a special theme and if you dress to match the theme you can be entered in the raffle twice. If that isn’t enough incentive, Active Soles gives each participant a card that they stamp for each time you participate, and after your tenth run you get a free t-shirt. The Happy Run is meant for all ages and fitness levels, so if you’re wanting to get more exercise in your life, Monday nights in downtown Palmer is a great place to start.

Backcountry Bike and Ski and Active Soles Performance Footwear have teamed up to offer you a great opportunity to explore and get moving right out your own back door. We have come up with a list of Target Adventures for you to complete throughout the summer. Bring along a friend, your furry companion, or your whole family as you complete the awesome adventures right here in your own backyard. Choose any 10 Target Adventures that you like, photo-document your successes by hashtagging #SolesInTheBackcountry, posting the pictures to our Facebook Site, or e-mailing them to solesinthebackcountry@gmail.com.
